UVa-Wise, Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center to host information security workshop
A workshop designed to teach business owners, information technology managers and individuals how to secure computing and network assets is set for May 29 at the Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center (SVTDC) in Lebanon, hosted by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The four-hour workshop, “Information Security 101: Don’t Get Caught With Your Firewall Down,” is an interactive session crafted to explain jargon, acronyms, benefits and misconceptions about network and data security.
UVa-Wise, Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology, the Southwest Virginia Technology Council and the Virginia Small Business Development Centers are the sponsors for the event, part of Technology Week, May 27-30, at SVTDC.
Ron Perry, a broadband strategist with the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), will conduct the workshop. Prior to joining CIT, Perry managed the engineering and technical development of data products for NTELOS. Perry also serves as the technology chair and vice chair on the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s Board of Directors, which was awarded a Computerworld Honors 21st Century Achievement Award in 2004.
In the session, Perry will use his extensive broad research and technology development background to teach the basics of information security from firewalls to acceptable use policies, as well as the benefits of effective information security.
Workshop participants get a hands-on opportunity to learn ways to avoid common network security mistakes, how to secure wireless networks and how to develop antivirus strategies, as well as cost-effective ways to secure computer assets.
The workshop begins with registration at 10 a.m. at the Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center, located at 141 Highland Drive in Lebanon. Lunch is included.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required. To register, contact Krissi Lee at 276-889-8180 or klee@uvawise.edu.
