Highland Cavalier Club awards scholarships to two rising senior athletes.

Two rising seniors at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were recently recognized as outstanding scholar athletes by the Highland Cavalier Club.

Britany Lawson

Richard Davidson, president of the Highland Cavalier Club, presented $1,000 scholarships to Britany Lawson of Duffield and Randy Hippeard of Stafford.

“We are extremely proud of each of them,” Davidson said.

The Highland Cavalier Club promotes and supports the College’s athletic programs. Members decided this year to honor a top female athlete and male athlete with the booster organization’s initial scholarship award, Davidson said.

Randy Hippeard

Coaches were asked to submit nominees. The Highland Cavalier Club’s Board of Directors received the coaches’ recommendations and tapped Hippeard and Lawson as the top two scholar athletes.

Lawson, 20, plays volleyball and softball for the College. Lawson has received many honors during her three years on the volleyball team and her two years on the softball team. She has been a conference player of the week and National Libero of the Week as well as a Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year on this year’s national qualifier volleyball team. Lawson was named o the First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-State in softball and was selected to the USA International Team.

“Britany is probably the best female athlete this College has and will ever see,” said Coach Steve Dallman.

Hippeard, 22, continues to make headlines for his passing accuracy as a member of the Highland Cavaliers football team.  He has held the position of quarterback for three years. Hippeard was named First Team All-East Division of the Mid-South Conference in 2006 and was picked by coaches of the Southeast Region of the AFCA as the top football performer. He was a NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week and was named Mid-South Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions.

“Randy has become a significant leader on this team,” said Head Football Coach Bruce Wasem. “His influence affects all players on the squad.”

The only branch campus of the University of Virginia, UVa-Wise is ranked among the nation’s top ten public liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report. UVa-Wise offers Virginia's only undergraduate degree in software engineering, among 28 other degrees and professional programs in the liberal arts tradition of Thomas Jefferson.
