Coal Miners Appreciation Day at Feb. 5 hoops matchup at UVa-Wise

Alpha Natural Resources is sponsoring Coal Miners Appreciation Day on Feb. 5 when The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Cavaliers take on the Georgetown College Tigers in a Mid-South Conference basketball matchup in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium in Wise.


The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. and the men’s contest starts at 4 p.m. During halftime of the men’s game, Alpha will be honored for its generosity toward the Miners’ Family Scholarship fund at UVa-Wise. The company will also make a presentation regarding its continued support of the fund.


Alpha, the third largest coal company in the nation, is a generous supporter of UVa-Wise and the College’s athletic program. The Abingdon-based company’s support of the Miners’ Family Scholarship fund will enhance the lives of coal mining families for years to come.


The fund, created through the UVa-Wise Alumni Association, provides scholarships each semester to several qualifying students who are coal miners or who are dependents of men and women who make their livings mining in the region.


Admission to the game is $5 for adults. UVa-Wise students and all students K-12 are admitted free.


Alpha Natural Resources employs approximately 6,500 people and continues as one of the nation’s largest suppliers and exporters of metallurgical coal that is used for steelmaking.
