Early Childhood Conference set for April 27

Author Herman Parish, creater of the Amelia Bedelia series, will be the keynote speaker at the Southwest Virginia Early Childhood Conference sponsored by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Recording artist Richard Perlmutter, creator Beethoven’s Wig, a project that introduces children to classical music, will also speak at the conference.

Ellen Booth Church, a professor of early childhood education at Nova Southeastern University, is also a special guest at the event. Church has been a columnist for “Scholastic’s Parent and Children” magazines, a consultant for PBS, Nelvana and Cartoon Network and a writer dedicated to enriching the lives of young children and their families.

The conference, slated for Saturday, April 27, is designed for educators working in pre-kindergarten through third grade. The conference begins at 8:30 in the Fred. B. Greear Gymnasium.

The UVa-Wise Center for Teaching Excellence, UVa-Wise Education Department, and the Student Virginia Education Association are sponsoring the conference.

The conference will include workshops, displays, vendors, door prizes, light lunch, silent auction on SVEA’s themed teaching baskets and a Teacher’s Market that allows veteran educators to bring previously used learning tools to sell to other teachers.
