UVa-Wise benefit gala dinner, concert and silent auction set for May 1st

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present PRISM 2010, its fifth annual gala dinner, silent auction and concert on Saturday, May 1, at 6 p.m.

The benefit concert has a new venue this year. The event will be staged in the Gilliam Center for the Arts. The facility opened last fall and houses all fine and performing arts programs.

PRISM 2010 celebrates the arts while benefiting the fine arts program and providing for student scholarships at UVa-Wise.

Just as a multitude of colors emanate from a crystal prism, the concert stages a multitude of songs and instrumental works in immediate succession from every angle of the concert hall. As a saxophone quintet finishes a tune in one corner of the hall, the UVa-Wise Concert Choir sings from the opposite side of the room. As the choir’s last note fades, the UVa-Wise Concert Band begins the first bars of a concert march.

The program emphasizes popular, jazz and lighter concert fare with a few classical standards added to the mix. Each musical ensemble representing the College will perform in the concert.

In addition to the concert, the Spring 2010 UVa-Wise Student Art Exhibition will be on display in the Gilliam Center’s 121 Gallery. Technical and lighting support for the concert is provided by UVa-Wise theater students.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person and may be purchased by calling David Volk, assistant professor of music, at 276-328-0271.
