Groundsman training course offered this fall in Russell County

The Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center in Lebanon will host an electrical groundsman industrial training course beginning Oct. 4.

The comprehensive training will offer participants the opportunity to train for a career as an electrical linesman. The tuition for this program is $3,750.  Interested participants may be eligible for tuition assistance.  The Workforce Investment Board and the Virginia Employment Commission have approved the program for individuals who are qualified for Trade Relief Act Funds.

This is the first time the program has been offered in the coalfield region.

“Few programs pack as much into 16 days as this one does, and no other program provides all the skills and certifications an individual needs to step into a groundsman job,”  said Shannon Blevins, director of the Office of Economic Development for The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. “The program also offers job placement for students who successfully complete it.”

A groundsman performs a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution and transmission lines and equipment. This training program will consist of 128 instructional hours, eight hours a day, four days a week for four weeks beginning Oct. 4 in Lebanon. At the completion of the training, students are eligible to sit for placement exams for qualification into job placement assistance.

Training topics include: Safety, Protective Equipment, Knot Tying, Basic Work Zone, Grounding Equipment, Transformers, Materials & Tools, Flagging, Installing Sleeves, a CDL Class B Learner’s Permit Review, CPR/ First Aid and a 10 hour OSHA Class.

Each class begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m at the Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center at 141 Highland Drive, Lebanon, Virginia. Seats in the class are limited and the deadline for enrollment is Sept. 27.
