Highland Cavalier Club awards scholarships to UVa-Wise athletes

Two rising seniors at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise were recently recognized as outstanding athletes by the Highland Cavalier Club.
Richard Davidson, president of the Highland Cavalier Club, announced that $1,000 scholarships would be awarded to Kaitlyn Collins of Russell County and Spencer Adams of Wise County.
“We are proud of both Kaitlyn and Spencer,” Davidson said.
The Highland Cavalier Club promotes and supports the College’s athletic programs. Members honor a rising senior female and male athlete with a scholarship each year.
Coaches were asked to submit nominees. The Highland Cavalier Club’s Board of Directors received the coaches’ recommendations and made the final selections.
Collins, a member of the volleyball team, is an environmental science major. She is a member of several campus organizations, including the Multi-Cultural Alliance.
“Kaitlyn typifies what it means to be a hard working, committed student athlete,” Kendall Rainey, head volleyball coach said. “She always strives to get that extra kill in practice, the extra repetition in the weight room and the extra credit on the test.”
Adams, captain of the cross country team, is a biochemistry major. He has served as an Expedition Leader and is a member of the Darden Society and Sigma Zeta. As a Healthy Appalachia Institute Fellow, Adams authored the study “Diabetes in Southwest Virginia.”
“His commitment to help his community through education, research and service separates Spencer from even the very best community-minded young people,” Coach Doug Carter said.
