Music of the Civil War era set for March 29 at UVa-Wise

The campus and community is cordially invited to attend a free lecture-concert featuring music of the Civil War era on Thursday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths at UVa-Wise.

Presenting the program will be D. Michael Donathan, Professor Emeritus of Music at UVa-Wise, with a choir comprised of 25 voices from the staff, faculty, and students of the college, along with others from the community.

The program will include slave songs presented by Sandra Jones, a member of the UVa-Wise staff, followed by choral and solo performances of jubilee songs (spirituals) first performed in the 1870s, Union and Confederate patriotic songs, popular songs originally composed for the 19th century minstrel show, parlor songs originally composed for the home by Stephen Collins Foster and other composers of the day, and piano four-hand music by Foster and Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the first major American composer-performer of the 19th century.
