Skiena to lecture on Sept. 1

Steven Skiena, a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Stony Brook University and a co-founder and chief science officer of General Sentiment, a social media and news analytics company, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, Sept. 1.

The lecture is the second in the Digital Rebel Speaker Series. Skiena’s talk will highlight his most recent book "Who's Bigger: Where Historical Figures Really Rank.” The public is invited to attend the even, set for 7 p.m. in the Rhododendron Room of the Slemp Student Center.  Refreshments will be provided.

His book represents a fascinating intersection of analytics and the humanities. It provides a unique tool for parsing huge sets of data, impartial in its very nature, whose implications are just now being explored. It is a brand new lens for exploring how textbooks are written, how halls of fame are filled and what that means about who we are today.
