UVa-Wise Marching Highland Cavaliers mark autism awareness on Oct. 8

The Marching Highland Cavaliers of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host autistic children and their families at the Oct. 8 football game at Carl Smith Stadium in Wise.

Members of the marching band and its instructors will treat the children and their families to a picnic prior to the 6 p.m. game against Kentucky Christian University. The children will march into Carl Smith Stadium with the band shortly before kickoff.

At halftime, Reese Volk, son of UVa-Wise Associate Professor of Music David Volk, will be the honorary drum major for the Marching Highland Cavaliers. He will also lead the band on the field and get the halftime performance started. All the children will sit in the stands with the band.

“It is quite an honor to feature Reese in this way,” said David Volk. “We are looking for ward to seeing him on the field. It is a wonderful way to acknowledge the autistic community, bring attention to the difficulties they face and to celebrate their lives.”

Members of the Marching Highland Cavaliers will distribute autism awareness literature and ribbons in the stands during the game. The band will also collect donations for autism research.
