UVa-Wise and University of Luxembourg seek sister institution relationship
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise signed a letter of intent for an affiliation with the University of Luxembourg to promote the sharing of research programs, faculty and students.
The letter explores the possibility of establishing a sister institution relationship to enhance opportunities for study abroad and cultural exchange with the sole university in Europe’s largest private banking capital, Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg.
In coming months, both institutions will reach an agreement to allow faculty and student exchange opportunities by fostering participation in cultural projects and coursework. Events that may enrich or expand educational and cultural understanding will add to the agreement value.
The University of Luxembourg will be the seventh sister institution for UVa-Wise and will be the first to cover the necessities of the French Program. The college currently has agreements with institutions in Austria, Germany, UK and Mexico and two in Spain.
“This intent presents the potential for great opportunities with a multilingual university,” said Witold Wolny, field director of international programs at UVa-Wise. “We have been searching some time for an institution of this caliber.”
The University of Luxembourg is the only public university in a country of 500,000 residents. Founded in 2003, it is one of the few multilingual universities in the world where courses are taught in English, German and French. The university offers 11 bachelor’s degrees, 25 master’s degrees and nine other qualifications.
“It is a dynamic institution with a personal atmosphere, much like here,” said Jenny Hällen-Hedberg, University of Luxembourg’s international relations officer. Because of the similarities between UVa-Wise and the University of Luxembourg, such as the school size and ample academic opportunities, we have high expectations for both parties.”
All Luxembourg undergraduates are required to spend at least one semester abroad. The requirement is fulfilled in cooperation with partner institutions in Europe, Asia and North America. The University of Luxembourg currently conducts its activities at multiple campus locations and is planning for significant expansion in a few years.
