UVa-Wise to celebrate Martin Luther King's life on Jan. 20


The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 20 with a dinner, music, lecture and a variety of performances.

The public is invited to participate in the event, which begins with a free dinner at 5:30 p.m. at the First Church of God in Wise.  A candlelight march from the First Church of God through downtown Wise begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at the Wise Baptist Church, where the formal program will begin at 7 p.m.

Elder Charles Hawkins of Kingsport will deliver the lecture for the 7 p.m. program.

Hawkins serves as Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church in Kingsport, and also serves as the presiding elder of the Bristol District within the East Tennessee and Virginia Conference, where he oversees six churches.

The event will also feature songs from the Mt. Sinai Men’s group from Lynch, Ky., an interpretive dance by Hannah Jones and Shameeka Shepard, and a performance by Grace Livingston portraying Coretta Scott King. Justin Preston will recite King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
