UVa-Wise faculty receive Harrison Awards

Several members of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise faculty were presented with Harrison Faculty Awards on May 10.
Eric Drummond Smith, assistant professor of political science, received the Rising Star Award, presented to a faculty member with fewer than five years of full-time teaching experience who exemplifies excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.
David Volk, assistant professor of music, received the Outstanding Teaching Award, presented to a faculty member who excels in classroom teaching and who works particularly well with students.
Tauna Gulley, instructor of nursing, and Sheila Cox Combs, registrar, received the Outstanding Service Award, given to those who have made significant contributions to UVa-Wise and the community.
Puiu Vasilescu, associate professor of psychology, and Esteban Ponce, assistant professor of Spanish, received the Outstanding Research and Publication Award, earned by faculty members who have made significant contributions to published research in his or her discipline.
James Horton, associate professor of psychology, received the Mentoring Undergraduate Research Award, presented to a faculty member who fosters relationships with undergraduates that results in research appropriate for publication or public presentation.
Bruce Wasem, head football coach and freshmen advisor, received the Outstanding Advising Award, presented to a faculty member who has provided exceptional service to students through advising and related activities that support the academic program.
Betty Humphreys, associate professor of business, received the Distinguished Professor Award, presented to a faculty member who has given outstanding service in many areas of the academic program over a long period of time.
Amy Clark, associate professor of rhetoric, and John Adrian, assistant professor of English, received special recognition for being nominated for the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia’s 2010 Outstanding Faculty Award.
The late David Harrison, one of the University of Virginia’s most generous donors, had a deep appreciation for the gifts of great teachers and exceptional research. Several years ago, upon the recommendation of University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III, Harrison devoted a portion of his support to honor faculty at UVa-Wise.
