UVa-Wise receives award from Jeffress Memorial Trust

February 1, 2012—The Thomas F. Jeffress and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust of Richmond has made its first gift to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The $20,000 award will support the work of David L. Chambers, assistant professor of ecology and physiology, for his research project, “There’s a Change Coming Soon: Environmental Alternations, Stress and Disease in the Amphibians of Appalachia.”  The award will provide summer support for Chambers and one undergraduate student, cover some supply costs and fund travel for presenting results at local, regional or national conferences.

The Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust was established in 1981 to support basic research in chemical, medical and other scientific research through grants to educational and research organizations in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Jeffress Memorial Trust was founded under the will of Mr. Robert M. Jeffress, a business executive and philanthropist from Richmond, Va.  Mr. Jeffress had a deep interest in his native state and made large contributions in support of scientific research.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is the only four-year, state supported college in southwestern Virginia and the only branch campus of the University of Virginia.  Recognized as a “College of Distinction” for its engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes, the college is also a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, which represents a distinguished sector of liberal arts higher education institutions.
