UVa-Wise students present at regional Outdoor Expo

 

Several UVa-Wise students will showcase their research on the biodiversity of the Clinch River and their work to boost tourism in the region at the Southwest Virginia Outdoor Expo in Abingdon.

Barton Myers to speak on Civil War guerrillas

 

 

 

Barton A. Myers, a history professor at Washington & Lee University and a leading authority on guerrilla warfare during the Civil War, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Friday, Sept.  26.

German scholar to speak on the Jacksonian America

 

 

Jan Hildenhagen, a history professor at Ruhr University-Bochum, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, Sept. 29. 

Hildenhagen is currently traveling throughout the United States speaking on and researching his doctoral dissertation on classical influences on Andrew Jackson’s political philosophy.  He will present a lecture titled, “Andrew Jackson and the Future of the Republic.” 

UVa-Wise offers public free trial pass to wellness and fitness centers

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is giving the public, age 16 and older, a temporary pass to use the new Winston Ely Health & Wellness Center, the fitness facilities in the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center and the pool in Greear Gymnasium.
 

UVa-Wise graduates among lightest debt load in U.S.

 

The student loan tally for college graduates has grown to crippling levels nationally, but students who earn degrees from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise leave campus with a diploma and low debt.

UVa-Wise is once again among the top public national liberal arts colleges whose graduates leave college with a low debt load, according to the latest issue of the U.S. News and World Report’s annual college guide.

Children invited to learn and play at UVa-Wise Funtasia

Characters from childhood stories and fairy tales will host kids for a magical afternoon of games, activities, and crafts during Fantasia on Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The adventure begins in the Betty Gilliam Sculpture Garden with a book character parade followed by a musical performance from Frozen’s Elsa. Children can enjoy inflatables and collecting tokens to redeem for prizes.

Special theme areas include “Frozen,” “Ninja Turtles,” “Planes,” “Clifford,” “Wizard of OZ” and more.

Muslim reformist Irshad Manji to lecture Sept. 24

 

Irshad Manji, a reformist Muslim and founder and director of the Moral Courage Project, a program designed to enable students to make values-based decisions, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Sept. 24.

The lecture, sponsored by the Colgate Darden Lecture Fund, begins at 7 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Skiena to lecture on Sept. 1

 

Steven Skiena, a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Stony Brook University and a co-founder and chief science officer of General Sentiment, a social media and news analytics company, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, Sept. 1.

UVa-Wise offers reading clinic tutoring for K-6

 

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is offering an after school reading clinic two days a week for children from kindergarten to sixth grade from 4 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. on campus.

UVa-Wise to host RTE 23 Music Festival

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host the RTE 23 Music Festival, Saturday, Aug. 30.

Presented by the Birthplace of Country Music, the festival features four Appalachian music performances.

Activities for children will be available 3 p.m. with performances beginning at 4:15 p.m.
