UVa-Wise is now just one step away from becoming a full NCAA Division II member.
The Division of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present its Summer Band Camp concert on Thursday, July 10, in the Cantrell Hall Banquet Room.
The concert begins at 6:15 p.m. and will feature high school students from Central High School, Eastside High School and Union High School in Wise County, Clintwood High School in Dickenson County, J.I. Burton High School in Norton and Lee High School in Lee County.
The performance will include selections by Frank Erikson, Ludwig Van Beethoven and other noted composers.
Jennifer M. Murray, assistant professor of history at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, is the author of the recently published, “On A Great Battlefield: The Making, Management, and Memory of Gettysburg National Military Park, 1933-2013.”

It’s not hard to find a banjo in Southwest Virginia, but it can be quiet a feat to locate the traditional mountain music instrument in Luxembourg.
Several students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are tackling undergraduate research projects as part of the Fellowship in the Natural Sciences program.
The Department of Natural Sciences began the FINS program 12 years ago with the goal of providing opportunities for our students to fully engage in the scientific endeavor in the same manner as professional scientists.
Several staff members were recognized during an awards ceremony, June 21, for their many years of service and contributions to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Rhonda Bentley, Rue Gembach, Janie Hamilton and Martha Necessary were recognized for 35 years of service.
Ray Asher, Glenda Hubbard and Bill Statzer were honored for 25 years of service.
Elizabeth Samerdyke, coordinator for Advising, Retention and Assessment at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, was selected for a fifth consecutive year to participate in the College Board’s Annual Advanced Placement Reading.
Each June, advanced placement teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather to evaluate and score free-response sections of the advanced placement exams. During the scoring sessions, more than 12,500 advanced placement readers evaluate 4.2 million exams.

Four students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are spending the summer researching various projects as part of the Summer Scholars Program.
The C. Bascom Slemp Foundation funds the undergraduate research. The funds are specifically provided for undergraduate research that falls outside the natural sciences.
