Upward Bound students complete summer program

The Upward Bound program recently completed its 41st year on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise with the wrap-up of its summer program with the theme “Fulfilling the Dream.”

More than 40 students completed the program, which included academic offerings to prepare students for SOL-tested subjects. Participants studied English, literature, algebra II, geometry, advanced math, biology, advanced biology, chemistry, physics, U.S. history, 20th century history, government, French, Spanish, current events, art and dance.

Bridge students, those who have graduated high school and are preparing for college, were enrolled in Psychology 110 and Art 221 for college credit.

Students also participated in a work-study program with jobs on campus and off campus. Some participated in a photojournalism class to produce the summer magazine. Others attended career development class, which featured guest speakers, field trips to job sites, mock interviews and research papers.

In addition to academics and work, students had the opportunity to take part in a variety of leisure activities, including trips to the Virginia-Kentucky District Fair, Rocky Mount, The Kentucky Coal Museum and the William King Regional Arts Center.

At the end of the summer, participants were treated to an excursion to Williamsburg and Jamestown. Trip highlights included Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Virginia Beach, Busch Gardens, dinner in a tavern in Colonial Williamsburg and a ghost walk that began on the campus of William and Mary and included some Williamsburg homes.

The summer session concluded with the Annual Parents’ and Awards Night.

Burton High School; Rhiannon Doss, Valerie Mullins, Zachary Mullins and Teara Sykes, Clintwood High School; Tabitha Duty, Ariel Kennedy and Josh Mullins, Coeburn High School; Jacob Austin, Ashley Bowen, Justin Day, Michael Dunn, Brittany Grubb, Whitney Holts, Courtney Moore, Isaac Moore, Lori Moore, Mackenzie Moore, Maggie Moore, Gavin Rose, Michelle Salyers, Timmy Stevens and Kara Yates, Ervinton High School; Katherine Collins, Cheyenne Elam, Cindy Greene, Kennith Lester, Misty Lucas, Brittany Marcum, Thomas Mullins and Lyndsay Oakes, J. J. Kelly High School; Jacob Bateman, Ben Bowman, Christina Branham and Austin Gilliam, Pound High School; Rachel Buckett, Powell Valley High School; and Tayna McReynolds, St. Paul High School.

Upward Bound Bridge students, who will be attending college in the fall, included: Sydney Bowman, Pound (UVa-Wise); Jeremy Edwards, Clintwood (UVa-Wise); Faith Frost, Coeburn (UVa-Wise); Christina Graham, Coeburn (Lincoln Memorial University); William Lester, Wise (UVa-Wise); and Sarah Moore, Ervinton (Mountain Empire Community College).
