Characters from childhood stories and fairy tales will host kids for a magical afternoon of games, activities, and crafts during Fantasia on Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
The adventure begins in the Betty Gilliam Sculpture Garden with a book character parade followed by a musical performance from Frozen’s Elsa. Children can enjoy inflatables and collecting tokens to redeem for prizes.
Special theme areas include “Frozen,” “Ninja Turtles,” “Planes,” “Clifford,” “Wizard of OZ” and more.
Irshad Manji, a reformist Muslim and founder and director of the Moral Courage Project, a program designed to enable students to make values-based decisions, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Sept. 24.
The lecture, sponsored by the Colgate Darden Lecture Fund, begins at 7 p.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Steven Skiena, a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Computer Science at Stony Brook University and a co-founder and chief science officer of General Sentiment, a social media and news analytics company, will lecture at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, Sept. 1.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is offering an after school reading clinic two days a week for children from kindergarten to sixth grade from 4 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. on campus.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will host the RTE 23 Music Festival, Saturday, Aug. 30.
Presented by the Birthplace of Country Music, the festival features four Appalachian music performances.
Activities for children will be available 3 p.m. with performances beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Ruby Williams’ smile was warm and bright Friday as the Richmond resident and her family made their third visit to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
“I am so excited about this,” she said. “We are all excited.”
Papa John’s pizza is joining Chartwells Dining Services at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise to provide additional dining choices on campus.
Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 20, Papa John’s pizza will be available on the lower level of Smith Dining Commons.
Papa John's is the first national brand to join Chartwells Dining Services at UVa-Wise.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s David J. Prior Convocation Center is host to two concerts, Casting Crowns and Travis Tritt.
C. Group Productions will present an evening with Casting Crowns on Thursday, Aug. 28. The concert begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 and up.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will hold its 60th Fall Convocation on Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which officially begins the 2014-2015 academic term. The event features the installation of Student Government Association president and the Honor Court chair. In addition, new faculty will be introduced during the ceremony.
The theater division at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise plans to celebrate William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday by performing two of his plays and hosting a ProArt and American Shakespeare Center performance of a third play.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is now a Partner Campus with the Red Flag Campaign, a nationwide program to prevent dating violence on college campuses.
UVa-Wise successfully completed its first Red Flag Campaign last year. UVa-Wise now joins 19 other Virginia colleges or universities as Partner Campuses. As a Partner Campus, the College has committed to being actively involved in the Red Flag Campaign Advisory Committee for one year.
