UVa-Wise holds ribbon cutting ceremony for new Convocation Center

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Oct. 10 on its $30 million Convocation Center, a facility that many see as a vital part of the region’s economic development efforts.

Children invited to the Hallo-Read Carnival at UVa-Wise

A little magic and mischief are sure to be in the air at the Hallo-Read Carnival, Thursday, Oct. 20 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

Created for children age 12 and under, the Hallo-Read Carnival offers games, food and lots of activities focused on making reading fun. 

2011 UVa-Wise Technology Symposium to feature Steve Brandon

The 2011 UVa-Wise Technology Symposium will be held on Oct. 25 starting at 8:30 a.m. in the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center 5th floor conference area.

The symposium will focus on becoming an entrepreneur inside one’s own business or organization.

Sharon Lechter is guest speaker at Napoleon Hill Day at UVa-Wise

Bestselling author Sharon Lechter will deliver will deliver the keynote address at the annual Napoleon Hill Day on Oct. 24 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The event is held in conjunction with the FBLA Fall Conference and will begin at 11 a.m. in Greear Gymnasium.

Scholar and author Sharon Hatfield is the featured writer for Coffee Night, a reading and performing event dedicated to the poetry and prose at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the surrounding community.

Wright to lecture at UVa-Wise on Nov. 11

Jack Wright, a retired professor from Ohio University’s School of Film, will speak about his experiences as a UVa-Wise student during the Vietnam War on Friday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.

Wright, who made his reputation as a musician and advocate for the Appalachia region and its people, will lecture in the Dogwood Room of the C. Bascom Slemp Center. The UVa-Wise Lecture Committee is sponsoring the event.

Blood drive set for Nov. 8 at UVa-Wise

The Office of Greek Life at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, along with fraternities and sororities, will sponsor a blood drive on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Cantrell Banquet Hall.
The event benefits MARSH Regional Blood Center, which represents several hospitals in the region. Donors are entered in a drawing for a chance to win Titans/Colts NFL tickets for a Dec. 18 game.

Virginia Oil and Gas Association funds UVa-Wise scholarship

The Virginia Oil and Gas Association is giving back to Southwest Virginia by endowing a scholarship at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Contributions gifts from private individuals as well as local gas producers doing business in Southwest Virginia were given to endow the scholarship.

The generous gift will allow the awarding of scholarships to worthy and deserving students at UVa-Wise. Preference will be given to applicants who are employed by the oil and gas industry or dependents of those employed by the industry.
