Greetings to Highland Cavalier Fans...
 |
We are extremely proud of all of our student athletes for their accomplishments on the fields/courts, in the classroom, and in our community. Despite having approximately 30% of the athletic scholarships of our competitors and very high academic standards, our teams have earned 22 championship or regional/national qualification banners since 2001.
I will now share just a few of the highlights from the past year:
2006-07 UVA-Wise athletic highlights
*Football - Ranked 24th in the NAIA top 25 final 2006 poll, NAIA national leader in total offense, RB Ra’Shad Morgan received the Bill Dudley Award for the top small college football player in Virginia. He also was named NAIA All-American first team and set school records for rushing yards, all-purpose yards and touchdowns for a season.
*Volleyball - All-NAIA Region XII and All-AAC Natasha Viers was selected to play over the summer for a Team USA Volleyball traveling team.
*Women’s Basketball - Sarah Helton became the all-time leading scorer (2,190 pts.) and was an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention selection.
*Baseball - set a school record with 32 wins, placed third in the NAIA Region XII playoffs, Brad Robbins led the AAC and was second in the NAIA with a .479 batting average while he led the AAC and was third in the nation with a .923 slugging percentage.
*Women’s Tennis - made its 4th consecutive NAIA Region XII championships appearance.

School/Community Outreach
Our coaches and student-athletes also completed numerous community projects including, but not limited to, free sports instructional clinics, reading programs, a field day for elementary schools and trash clean up projects.
We also worked with our five county region to help host post-season playoffs for district (baseball and tennis), regionals (football, tennis and softball) and state (softball). These events brought approximately 12,000 people to our beautiful campus and our quality athletic facilities.
It is truly an exciting time for our college and UVa.-Wise athletics and I sincerely appreciate your support for what we do by your presence at our events and your financial gifts.
Most Sincerely,
Ray Spenilla
Director of Athletics
