Sabrina Pletz - Assistant Athletic Trainer

Office Phone: 276-376-4591

After an extensive search, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise has added a new and important piece to the athletic department in new assistant athletic trainer Sabrina Pletz.  The new member of the training staff took over her new position in time for the preseason fall sports camps and has taken off running since assuming her new duties with the Highland Cavalier athletes.

Pletz joins still new head athletic trainer Sue Geesey-Jean to make up the two full-time member athletic training staff on the UVa-Wise campus.

“We are thrilled that Sabrina has accepted the athletic training position at UVa.-Wise.  With our staff now complete we hope to utilize our strengths to continually improve the quality of athletic training services for all student-athletes,” explains Geesey-Jean.

The newly appointed athletic trainer is not unfamiliar to UVa-Wise and the southwest Virginia area.  Pletz completed her bachelor of science degree in movement and leisure studies with an emphasis on athletic training at Cumberland College, now the University of the Cumberlands, in Williamsburg, Kentucky

“I love the mountains and scenery here in Wise.  The main reason I chose UVa-Wise is the attitudes and personalities of the people in the athletic department,” admits Pletz.  “Sue (Geezey-Jean) was also a huge reason that I took the job.  She is so professional and I believe that I can learn a lot from working beside her.”

Pletz comes to the Cavs after providing injury rehabilitation in a clinical setting for the past year at the Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team in Jeffersonville, Indiana.  She also served as the primary athletic trainer at the McDonald’s All-American Games in Louisville, Kentucky last March.

The new assistant earned her master’s degree in health and human performance with an emphasis in exercise science and sport administration from Fort Hays State University, an NCAA Division II member, in Fort Hays, Kansas.  While at Fort Hays State, Pletz was primarily responsible for the Tigers’ football, baseball, women’s basketball and women’s track & field teams.  She also served as clinical supervisor for ATEP students and provided rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries.

The Louisville, Ky. native and her husband, Matthew, now reside in Wise, Va.
