UVa-Wise Returns to Full Strength with Duo Head Trainers

June 24, 2008

Wise, Va. -- The University of Virginia’s College at Wise returned to full strength in the athletic training department with the hiring of the new pair of head athletic trainers Ryan Georgi and Reg Mungrue. Georgi joined the Highland Cavalier athletic department last November and Mungrue came on board this month to team up to take care of the 11 intercollegiate athletic teams.

The two new UVa-Wise co-head athletic trainers will provide the athletic department with the most training experience in four years. The new training team will add a third member with an additional assistant trainer to join them for the fall semester.

Georgi came to Wise from fellow Mid-South/Appalachian Athletic Conference school in Union College where he was serving as assistant athletic trainer. He was part of the Union staff for just a short 10 months before having the opportunity to step in to direct the UVa-Wise effort near the end of the fall sports season.

The Florida native arrived at Union College in February of 2007 where he directed the Bulldogs secondary athletic training room. Georgi served as main team coverage for the Union baseball, football and women’s volleyball teams over his time in Barbourville, Ky.

Before moving to Union College, Georgi spent the 2005-06 academic year as a graduate assistant trainer for NCAA Division II member Delta State (Miss.) University. During the year, Ryan worked for the Statesmen men’s and women’s soccer and softball teams.

Georgi earned his bachelor of science degree in 2003 from the University of West Florida in health, leisur & exercise science sports med-athletic training. He completed his master’s of health, physical education & recreation in 2006 from Delta State.

Mungrue comes south from upstate New York and Plattsburgh State University to join Georgi in the Cavs’ athletic training department. He moves into a head athletic trainer spot after serving as assistant athletic trainer for NCAA Division III Plattsburgh State for the past four years.

The Toronto, Ontario native led the athletic training efforts for the Cardinals’ men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s hockey and softball squads from 2004-08. Mungrue spent the previous two years (2002-04) as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

The new athletic trainer had the experience of being the Canadian Junior National Baseball team head athletic trainer for the 2001-02 seasons. He was also a graduate assistant at Bishop’s University in Lennoxville, Quebec in 2001 while completing clinical internships at the University of South Florida and Sheridan Athletic Injury Clinic and Oakville Sports Medicine Center (Oakville, Ontario).

Mungrue completed athletic training internships for the Toronto Blue Jays, University of Toronto and Brock University over the 1996 through 2000.

The UVa-Wise athletic trainer earned his bachelor of arts degree in physical education from Brock University in 1998. He added a diploma in sports injury management from Sheridan College (1998-2001) before earned his master’s of science degree in sports and exercise science from West Texas A & M University in the spring of 2004.
