Cavs Use Long-Ball to Sweep Baseball Opener at Tenn. Temple

Chattanooga, TN – The Highland Cavaliers used the long-ball to sweep the season-opening baseball doubleheader against Tennessee Temple Friday afternoon. Nathan Kiser blasted a grand slam in a 16-0 five inning first game win while Andrew Anderson’s eighth frame solo shot completed the sweep, 6-5, over the Crusaders.
Kiser connected on his grand slam in the first inning to start the Cavalier (2-0) onslaught. UVa-Wise added four runs in the second, two in the third and four additional score in the fourth to go ahead 14-0. Brock Funk added a solo homer in the fifth for the 16-0 five-inning victory.
Brandon Bates went the five innings where he allowed three hits with no walks for the victory. Kiser finished with two hits and five rbi. Funk added a double while freshman Edwin Naruaez lined three hits with a two-bagger. Anderson sliced two hits in the 17-hit attack.
In game two, the two teams battled much tighter. The Cavs pushed across three scores in the first but the game was tied, 3-3, after two innings. UVa-Wise scored twice in the fourth only to have single runs from Tennessee Temple (0-2) come across in the fifth and sixth innings to eventually take the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Anderson connected on a game-winning solo home run. David Jones came on to pitch a scoreless eighth and struck out a batter to pick up the win closing the game.
Short stop Jorge LaBoy had the only multiple hit effort for the Cavs with two hits and an rbi.
UVa-Wise will now be off until Tuesday afternoon when they host Virginia Intermont in a single game starting at 2:30 p.m.
