Portsmouth, OH – The Highland Cavaliers saw its four-game winning streak stopped Sunday afternoon in southern Ohio. Shawnee State prevailed in both baseball contests by tallies of 7-3 and 1-0 over UVa-Wise.
Andew Anderson sliced a top of the first run-scoring double for the Cavs (8-4). The lead would be short lived as the Bears tied the game in their half before pushing across four unearned runs in the second and never trail again. Uva-Wise posted a pair in the third to make it 5-3 but could get no closer and lost 7-3.
Matt Begley and Brandon Horton split the mound duties as they scattered 11 hits and three earned runs. Jorge LaBoy and Jon Reed pounded out two hits apiece in the contest.
UVa-Wise outhit Shawnee State (6-4) but could not plate any runners in the second game. Mike Elliott allowed only three hits and struck out five in five innings of work on the mound for the Cavs. His lone miscue came in the fourth when Ryan Rowland lined a home run for the contest’s only score.
Josh Verts fired a scoreless and hitless sixth and seventh frames. Anderson hit his second double of the day while Mike Lang finished two for three.
UVa-Wise will trek to Emory & Henry College for a 1:00 p.m. pair of games Tuesday.
