Cavs’ Sluggers Cage Bears

Pikeville, KY – The Highland Cavaliers broke out their bats and caged the Bears Wednesday afternoon. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise pounded out 22 hits and saw four hurlers hold Pikeville College to nine to an 8-2 and 8-3 baseball sweep.

After a scoreless first, the Cavs (10-4) bats came alive in the second. Nathan Kiser led off with a double. He was followed by a two-bagger from Wil Childress and five-straight singles from Mike Lang, Matt Hall, Carlos Ramos, Edwin Narvaez and Jon Reed to go ahead 5-0. The Bears (5-4) pushed a pair across in the bottom of the second but the Cavs added a single score in the fifth and two insurance runs in the seventh for the 8-2 victory.

Brock Funk had a solid outing. He threw five frames allowing five hits and striking out six before Josh Verts posted two scoreless innings to wrap up the contest. Ramos lined three hits while Reed, Lang and Childress had two. Jorge LaBoy had the third UVa-Wise doubles.

In the late game, the visitors used the long ball. Kiser belted a two-run round-tripper in the top of the second. Reed socked a solo shot in the top of the third and Childress was not to be outdone with a two-run homer in the same frame to go ahead 5-0.

Pikeville hit the board in the bottom of the third with two runs only to see UVa-Wise answer back. The Cavs plated two scores in the fourth and added a single tally in the sixth for an eventual 8-3 final.

Along with the three home runs, Narvaez sliced a triple. Childress had his second two hit game of the day. Keith Davis picked up the win over 4 1/3 innings giving up two hits and fanning four batters. David Jones remained perfect on the year with 2 2/3 innings of strong relief.

UVa-Wise will return to its second Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Brevard College at 12:00 p.m.
