Big Inning Elevates and Sinks UVa-Wise Baseball Against Brevard

Brevard, NC -- Big innings both elevated The University of Virginia's College at Wise to a win and sunk the team to a defeat Saturday. The Highland Cavaliers plated seven runs in the fifth to take the opener, 9-5, but saw Brevard score four times in the fifth for the latter contest to win 4-2.
Tied 1-1after four frames, Brock Funk walked to start the big outburst for the Cavs (11-5/3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference). Matt Hall and Carlos Ramos followed with singles. Jon Reed and Andrew Anderson lifted sac flies and Nathan Kiser sliced a run-scoring hit for an 8-1 advantage. The Tornados added three runs in the bottomof the fifth but was not enough as each team scored once more for the 9-5 final.
Brandon Bates threw the first six innings for UVa-Wise to improve to 4-0. Kiser went three for four with a double. Wil Childress lined a double while Hall and Reed had a pair of hits.
In the second affair, Reed belted a rbi double as part of a two-run first inning. The score remain 2-0 Cavs until the bottom of the fifth. Kody Hightower peppered a two-run homer after Brevard (11-15/2-2 AAC) had hit a two out double which also scored two for a 4-2 lead. UVa-Wise was unable to put any more scores on the board in the last two trips to the plate to fall 4-2.
Along with Reed's double, Ramos, Jorge Laboy and Hall had the Cavs' other hits.
UVa-Wise will now be off until playing a twinbill at St. Paul's College on Tuesday afternoon.
