Cavs Blister Tigers with 35 Runs and Throw No-Hitter in Twinbill Sweep

Lawrenceville, VA -- The Highland Cavaliers belted five home runs, scored 35 runs and posted a combined no-hitter to blister the Tigers in a twinbill baseball sweep Wednesday. The University of Virginia's College at Wise run ruled St. Pauls' College 13-0 before no-hitter the home team in a 22-0 second affair.

In the opener, St. Paul's (0-26) walked the first six UVa-Wise (13-5) batters to key a six run trip to the plate for the Cavs. After a scoreless second, the Cavs received a three-run homer by Matt Hall and a solo shot from Jorge LaBoy in a five run inning to make it 11-0. UVa-Wise added a pair in the fourth before taking a 13-0 final in five innings. Brock Funk and Matt Begley combined on a one-hitter on the mound. Carlos Ramos, Edwin Narvaez, Jeremy Wright and Jon Reed added hits for the UVa-Wise offense.

The bats came alive in the second game and the pitching was perfect for the Cavs. LaBoy blasted his second solo round tripper in the first. UVa-Wise added five in the second. The Cavs added another five scores in the third after two dropped St. Paul's fly balls and a two-run home run from Funk. The visitors scored five times for a third-straight inning in the fourth before taking advantage of two Tiger errors in the fifth to plate six more tallies. David Myers connected on the team's third homer of the contest, a three run shot, in the fifth. Narvaez lined a triple while Begley and Wright both had a pair of hits.

Keith Davis, Brandon Horton and Chris Codemo combined for a no-hitter in the latter contest. Davis went the first three frames before the two relievers logged an inning each for the first Cavs' no-hitter in four years.

UVa-Wise will finish its three-game set at St. Paul's with a single game on Thursday afternoon before coming home to host Bluefield College for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
