Cavs Continue Run Barrage, Sweep Bluefield

Wise, VA – The Highland Cavaliers continued their week long run barrage on Saturday afternoon to sweep the Rams. After scoring 52 runs in a three-game series sweep at St. Paul’s, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise posted double figures two more times in defeating Bluefield College, 14-3 and 10-8.
The two wins takes UVa-Wise’s season record to 16-5 and 5-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Cavs’ sweep spoiled former UVa-Wise assistant and new Bluefield head coach Mike White’s homecoming. The Rams drop to 3-12 and 1-3 in the AAC.
In the opener, the Cavs pounded out 15 hits in the victory. Tied 1-1, Wil Childress doubled and Brock Funk singled to start the bottom of the second. Edwin Narvaez doubled to center to score one and Carlos Ramos drove in two more with his own two-bagger. Matt Hall, who singled, later scored on a sac fly by Jon Reed for a 5-1 lead. UVa-Wise added three more in the fifth and six tallies in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 14-1. Bluefield pushed two runs in the top of the seventh to take the final to 14-3.
Brandon Bates went 6 2/3 innings to improve to 5-0 on the season while Brandon Horton covered the final 1/3 of an inning getting the Ram batter to ground out to end the game.
The Cavs used two strong last trips to the plate to comeback for the win in the latter affair. After UVa-Wise led 2-1 with one inning complete, Bluefield put runs on the board in the next three innings. The Rams scored twice in both the second and third before adding a single tally in the fourth to make it 6-2.
Jorge Laboy drew a bases loaded walk and Reed doubled down the right field line for two more runs to cut the score to 6-5 after five frames. Bo Williams lined an rbi triple and later score on a fielders choice for increase the difference to 8-5.
In the sixth, Ramos doubled to bring in the first Cavs run of the inning. Hall singled in the second score before Reed helped tie the game when Ramos scored on a fielder’s choice. Andrew Anderson followed with the game-winning hit of a double past the third baseman for two runs and a 10-8 UVa-Wise lead. Closer David Jones worked a scoreless 1 2/3 rd innings to shut the door on Bluefield and pick up his first win.
In the doubleheader, Hall and Childress both lined five hits and doubled. Anderson added four hits and two doubles with five rbi. Reed accounted for three hits, a double and four rbi. Ramos rounded out the top UVa-Wise hitters with four hits, two doubles, three runs and three rbi.
The Cavs will now be off until traveling for a twinbill at Virginia Intermont on Thursday afternoon.
