UVa-Wise Splits Baseball Pair Against Alice LLoyd

Pippa Passes, KY -- UVa-Wise easily won the opener before host Alice Lloyd started fast to earn a baseball split in the nightcap. The Highland Cavaliers recorded 17 hits on the way to an 11-1 first contest win before the Eagles scored seven runs in the first two frames and held on for a 9-6 second affair victory.

In the twinbill, Matt Hall went four for five in the first game while both Mike Lang, who had a double, and Jon Reed combined for four hits of their own. Andrew Anderson laced a double in each game. Nathan Kiser, Matt Begley, Carlos Ramos, Jorge LaBoy and Erik Lemley had a two-bagger apiece on the day. Brock Funk went five strong innings where he allowed four hits and struck out four batters to improve to 5-0 for the season.

Leading 1-0 in the third, the Cavs (21-9) pushed across four scores with two outs behind five-straight hits. Hall, Laboy and Reed lined singles. Anderson doubled and Kiser singled behind him to lead to the runs to go ahead 5-0. UVa-Wise added three more tallies in the fourth, one in the fifth and a final pair in the top of the seventh to win 11-1. Alice Lloyd (6-19-2) homered for its lone score in the sixth.

After scoring UVa-Wise scored twice to begin the game, the Eagles plated five runs in the bottom of the frame behind four hits to edge ahead 5-2 and never trail the rest of the game. Alice Lloyd added two more runs in the second and a pair in the fourth to lead 9-2. UVa-Wise tried to come back with a score in the fifth and three runs in the top of the seventh but was not enough to fall 9-6.

The Cavs return home for a key Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader against Montreat College starting at 12noon on Saturday.
