Georgetown, KY – In a moved up baseball doubleheader, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise grabbed a pair of games Thursday at Georgetown College. The Highland Cavaliers stayed perfect in the early season by defeating the Tigers 3-0 and 4-1.
The games were originally scheduled as a weekend three-game series. The series was reduced to a doubleheader and moved up to today due to pending bad weather over the weekend.
Brandon Bates threw his second shutout and picked up his second victory of the year in game one. The senior pitcher scattered three hits over five innings and fanned three batters in the Cavs (4-0), 3-0, win. Clay Salyer threw a perfect final two innings with two strikeouts for the save.
Matt Hall and Jorge LaBoy both smacked run-scoring doubles. Carlos Ramos slapped two hits and Nathan Kiser added the team’s other hit. Edwin Naruaez drove in the other Uva-Wise run on a run-producing fielder’s choice.
In the second game, the quality pitching for the Cavs continued over the Tigers (0-2). Three UVa-Wise pitchers scatter six Georgetown singles in the 4-1 win. Brock Funk went the opening three innings to pick up the victory before Josh Verts followed with three strong frames of his own. David Jones picked up the second save of the day with a scoreless seventh.
At the plate, Jon Ryan Reed lined a leadoff triple to start the fourth inning. Reed scored the go-ahead run on a Kiser double to make it 2-1 Uva-Wise. The Cavs posted single runs in the sixth and seventh for the 4-1 final tally.
Kiser finished with two hits, a double and two rbi.
The Cavs will now be off until hosting NCAA Division II Alderson-Broaddus next Tuesday afternoon for a 12noon doubleheader at Stallard Field.
