Big Fourth Frame Gives UVa-Wise Baseball Split with Montreat

Wise, VA – Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth, UVa-Wise plated eight runs to post a comeback victory and baseball split against Montreat College Monday afternoon. Montreat prevailed in the opener, 13-5, before UVa-Wise claimed a 10-7 win in the latter affair.

The two clubs remain tied for third place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with 8-4 records. UVa-Wise is now 22-10 overall and Montreat stands at 20-17.

Carlos Ramos posted four hits for the Cavs in seven at bats including a double. Matt Hall added three hits and Jorge Laboy score three times.

In the opener, Montreat jumped out to an 8-0 lead. The visitors scored single runs in the third and fourth frames before running off five tallies in the fifth behind four hits and a UVa-Wise error. Montreat tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth.

The Cavs were able to put two runs on the bottom in their trip to the plate in the sixth. Andrew Anderson singled in Laboy before Brock Funk hit a sac fly to make it 8-2. Montreat added three scores in the eighth and two more in the ninth to lead 13-2. In the last of the ninth, Erik Lemley lined an rbi double and Laboy a two-run single but was not enough to fall 13-5.

UVa-Wise fell behind Montreat early in the latter contest. The visitors scored in each of the first four innings and led 7-0 in the middle of the fourth.

The Cavs put together the inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth. UVa-Wise rallied for eight runs in the trip to the plate. The team ran off six hits, three walks and a Montreat error. Ramos and Hall lined two hits apiece in the inning as the home team edged ahead 8-7. Jon Reed laced a two-run double in the sixth to make it 10-7 before David Jones recorded his 10th save of the year.

UVa-Wise will now be off until hosting Pikeville College Thursday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m.
