Wise, VA – Will Childress laid down a successful sucide squeeze bunt to score Jon Reed with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give UVa-Wise a baseball split with visiting Pikeville College. The Bears sliced five extra base hits and three homers for an 11-6 victory in game one before it took extra innings for the Cavs 10-9 win in the latter contest.

Reed and Jorge Laboy had white hot bats for UVa-Wise in the doubleheader. Reed went five for six, a two-run double, a two-run home run, three runs and five rbi. Laboy posted a five for six day as well with a double and three walks in the opener before going four for five with a three-run double and three runs scored in the nightcap. Childress, Andrew Anderson and Mike Lang laced two hits on the day. Childress and Lang launched solo homers in the opener.

The Cavs (23-11) refused to quit in the second game. UVa-Wise battled back from being behind three times before prevailing. Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Hall pushed a soft single through the right side of the infield to plate Childress to tie the game, 7-7, and send it into extra frames. A Keith Davis wild pitch in the top of the eighth brought two runs home to give Pikeville a 9-7 advantage. Lang and Laboy started the bottom of the eighth with singles before both scored on a deep two-bagger to left center off the bat of Reed to tie the game. Anderson was intentionally walked before two batters later Childress laid down the game-winning suicide squeeze for the 10-9 UVa-Wise victory.

Pikeville (19-25) scored a run in the top of the first by leadoff man Donald Tardy and never trailed in the game. Tardy tripled two runs home in the third and scored on a single for a 4-0 lead. Laboy, who doubled, and Reed, who singled, came home to cut the difference to 5-2 in the third. The visitors posted five runs on four hits including home runs by Travis Hall and Ryan Bartolon for a 9-2 tally. UVa-Wise pushed across a pair of scores in the fifth while Childress and Lang homered in the sixth but was not enough to fall 11-6.

Pikeville received two home runs from Bartolon in the opener while Hall and Jeff Stoll both had round-trippers as well. Tardy went five for seven, scored six times, drove in three runs and stole six bases from his leadoff spot.

UVa-Wise will have a day off before traveling to ninth-ranked Union College for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
