Barbourville, KY -- The ninth-ranked Union College Bulldogs bit the UVa-Wise baseball team hard on Saturday afternoon. The Highland Cavaliers led early in the both games but the Bulldogs had big inning in both games and pounded out 33 hits as the host won 19-9 and 14-4 to take the twinbill.

Union kept its one-game lead in the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 12-2 and improved to 38-9 overall. UVa-Wise falls to a tie for fourth place in the league with Brevard at 8-6 while 23-13 for the year.

At the plate for the Cavs, the trio of Wil Childress, Jon Reed and Brock Funk belted solo home runs on the day. Reed led the way with three total hits. Jorge Laboy had two hits and three runs batted in for the opener. Childress, Funk, and Narvaez recorded two hits on the day. Andrew Anderson had a game one double while Mike Lang scored twice and had an rbi.

After Union pushed across three runs in the first, UVa-Wise had Childress connect for a solo homer to lead off the top of the second. Funk, Narvaez and Laboy singled as the team posted a four run frame to lead 4-3. The visitors added a pair in the third, 6-3, before the Union run explosion. The Bulldogs saw three scores touch home in the third before an astounding nine tallies in the fourth to blow the game open, 15-6. The Cavs tried to rally but could only manage a three spot in the sixth to fall by a final of 19-9.

UVa-Wise jumped on the home squad again in the latter contest. Reed lined his second round-tripper of the week in the top of the first. Union answered with a single score in the bottom of the first before UVa-Wise edged ahead 3-1 with a pair in the second.

The Bulldogs came back with the first of what would be two five-run at bats in the bottom of the second for a 6-3 score. Union added three runs in the third, 9-3, before Funk hit a solo homer in the fourth for the last UVa-Wise run. Union added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to run-rule their visitors, 14-4, to complete the baseball sweep.

The Cavs will return to action on Monday afternoon when they make up a rained out doubleheader at Emory & Henry College starting at 1:00 p.m.
