Funk Fires No-Hitter to Give Cavs Baseball Split with Buffs

Wise, VA -- Brock Funk drove in two runs and fired a no-hitter on the mound to give UVa-Wise a baseball split Sunday against Milligan. The Buffaloes powered past the Highland Cavaliers with five doubles and three homers for an 11-6 opening victory. UVa-Wise received a three-run homer from Edwin Narvaez and Funk threw the second no-hitter of the year on the mound for the 10-0 five frame run-rule win.

Jon Reed paced UVa-Wise at the plate with two hits in each contest, scored three times and drove in a run. Narvaez had three hits, a three-run homer, a double and two runs. Funk lined a double in each game and Nathan Kiser recorded a double and single in the opener. Jorge Laboy went two for two, scored three runs and drew five walks.

For Milligan (18-26/7-9 AAC), the team's 15 hits all came in the first game. Jon Edmonds went four for six with two doubles. Justin Sauceman and David Rusaw both posted three hits with Saucemand having two doubles and Rusaw lining a three-run homer and one double. Tyler Turner added a solo homer.

In the top of the third with two outs, Turner and Sauceman blasted back-to-back homers to left field before the Buffs added one more run in the third for a 4-1 lead. Milligan never trailed the rest of the way. UVa-Wise (24-14/9-7 AAC) plated two scores with a two-run Kiser single in the fifth and a run-scoring Laboy hit in the sixth before Milligan won 11-6.

After a two-run Andrew Anderson single in the first trip of game two, Narvaez connected for a three-run round-tripper in the second to drive home Mike Lang and Carlos Ramos, who both singled. Reed doubled home another run and Kiser was hit by a pitch to bring home the other tally for a 7-0 advantage. Funk helped his own cause with a two-run double in the bottom of the third before he held Milligan hitless and scoreless over the fourth and fifth innings for the 10-0 win and no-hitter.

The Cavs will continue a busy week by hosting Emory & Henry College on Monday afternoon in a makeup twinbill starting at 2:00 p.m.
