Emory, VA -- Jon Reed and Matt Begley produced big offensive game in the nightcap to help UVa-Wise split a makeup doubleheader at Emory & Henry Thursday. Both Cavaliers had three hits of the team's 14-hit attack including a three-run homer from Begley in an 11-4 victory after dropping a close 5-4 contest in the opener.
The Thursday doubleheader marks the second pair of contests between the Cavs and Wasps in three days. Both teams won two of the four as UVa-Wise is now 26-16 and Emory & Henry moves to 10-30.
Reed accounted for four of the team's 19 hits on the day. He had an rbi single in the opener before going three for five with a triple, a run and two runs batted in for the latter contest. Begley pitched the first two frames of the second game as well as going three for three at the plate with a three-run homer, his second round tripper of the four-game series, and three runs scored. Jorge Laboy was the offensive first game standout with three extra base hits. The shortstop sliced two doubles and a two-run homer. Edwin Narvaez had two hits and two runs batted in for game two while Nathan Kiser had the team's other extra base hit of a double in game one. Brock Funk added a triple and single to round out the second contest.
In the opener's first frame, Reed singled to drive in Narvaez. The Wasps answered the tally with a double, single, triple and homer to plate four in the bottom of the first and would never trail again in the game. Laboy led off the third with a double and scored on an error and later belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh but UVa-Wise fell just short, 5-4, in the first affair.
After a scoreless first, the Cavs plated two runs on a sac fly by Mike Lang and a run-scoring hit by Narvaez. Emory & Henry put one tally on the board in their half before UVa-Wise exploded in the second. Reed lined a leadoff triple and scored on an Andrew Anderson ground out to start the big at bat. Lang drove in one with a hit, Narvaez had a two-run single and Reed had a two-run hit to finish off the six-run outburst to make it 8-1.
The Wasps added a trio of scores in the fifth before the Cavs answered in the sixth with three of their own. Anderson drew a leadoff walk, Wil Childress laid down a bunt single and Begley blasted a three-run round-tripper to complete the game's scoring for the 11-4 final score.
UVa-Wise will now travel to Bryan College Saturday for the final Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader of the year starting at 1:00 p.m.
