Johnson City, TN – Brock Funk pitched UVa-Wise past Montreat College in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball first round. Funk allowed seven hits as he went the full nine innings for the Cavs in the 4-1 victory to head into the winner's bracket.
With the win, UVa-Wise goes to 28-17, the most wins for close to a decade for the program. The Cavs will now move on to the winner's bracket to face the winner of the top seed Tennessee Wesleyan and eighth seed Bluefield College, who play the last game of the day at 7:30 p.m. The UVa-Wise game is set for a 12:30 p.m. start at Johnson City's Cardinal Park. A Cavs win on Wednesday will keep them in the winner's bracket for an 11:30 a.m. contest on Thursday while a loss will force to play a doubleheader in the loser's bracket for a 4:00 p.m. affair.
At the plate, UVa-Wise received six hits from six different players. Andrew Anderson had a two-run single and scored on a walk. Wil Childress had a run-scoring single while Nathan Kiser sliced a double. Edwin Narvaez and Jorge Laboy singled and scored with the other hit coming from Matt Begley. Funk scattered seven hits in nine innings on the mound while walking one and fanning three. The Cavs defense turned two double plays behind Funk.
After a scoreless first, Anderson drew a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Childress singled to plate Anderson and later scored on a Montreat error to make it 2-0. In the third, Narvaez and Laboy started the frame with hits. Jon Reed ground out to second to advance both before Anderson lined a single down the left field line to bring both runners home for a 4-0 tally.
Montreat's Noel Barnum led off the top of the fourth with a deep triple to centerfield. He scored the lone home team run as the next batter ground out to second but Montreat could not muster any more tallies against UVa-Wise to fall 4-1.
