Cavs Fall Twice in AAC Tourney, End Successful Season

Johnson City, TN – The Highland Cavaliers fell twice to higher seeded teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament to end their successful season. The AAC regular season champion Tennessee Wesleyan pounded out 20 hits to take UVa-Wise 15-1 before Brevard College pushed across six runs in its final two at bats for a 10-7 win.

The Cavs wrap up the 2006 season with its most wins in the last decade at 28-19. The squad was picked to finish seventh in the preseason AAC poll and completed the regular season as the fifth place team to exceed the expectations.

Against Tennessee Wesleyan, Edwin Narvaez and Jorge Laboy lined two singles with Narvaez scoring the lone run. Jon Reed and Wil Childress had hits and Brock Funk drove in the lone tally on a sac fly. In the Brevard game, Funk blasted a three-run homer and added a single. Reed sliced a triple while both Narvaez and Matt Hall produced a pair of hits. Laboy, Matt Begley and Childress singled one time.

UVa-Wise jumped on Tennessee Wesleyan in the bottom of the first. Narvaez and Laboy singled and Reed followed with a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Funk lofted a sac fly to left to plate Narvaez with the lone run of the frame and the contest for the Cavs.

The Bulldogs (30-13) tied the game in the top of the second and went ahead with a run in the third, 2-1. Tennessee Wesleyan added four more runs in the fourth before tallying six more scores in the sixth to blow open the game 12-1. They posted three more runs in the final three at bats for the 15-1 final score.

Funk helped UVa-Wise score first against Brevard (27-26) with a three-run round-tripper. The Tornados tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth on a Cavs error. UVa-Wise went back in front with a pair of runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to make it 7-4. Brevard tied the game with three tallies in the seventh before plating the three winning scores in the eighth to take away the 10-7 win.
