East Point, GA – For the first time in eight days, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise baseball team was able to take the field. The Highland Cavaliers proved to be just a little short as they dropped two one-run games, 7-6 in eight innings and 5-4, at Atlanta Christian.

UVa-Wise falls to 4-2 on the young season and will look to finish the three-game series depending on weather in the Atlanta area on Saturday.

In the opener, Brock Funk and Jon Ryan Reed blasted home runs to give UVa-Wise a 4-1 lead that would be short lived. Funk hit a solo homer in the second and Reed a three-run round-tripper in the top of the third frame.

The Chargers pushed across four scores in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 5-4. Both team scored once in the fourth. The Cavs scored to tie the game, 6-6, in the top of the sixth to for eventually force the game into extra innings. Atlanta Christian had its leadoff batter hit by a pitch, moved to second on sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to win 7-6.

Nathan Kiser lined two hits with a double and Carlos Ramos had a two-bagger as the other two hits than the homers from Funk and Reed. Brandon Bates threw the first three innings and Clay Salyer the following three frames before Horton had a tough time in the eighth.

UVa-Wise was the singles kings in the night cap. The Cavs lined 13 hits and held the Chargers to one hit but lost 5-4 due to four unearned runs.

Atlanta Christian posted the biggest inning of the game in the third. The home team took advantage of a hit batter, three walks, its lone hit and a throwing error for four runs to go ahead 4-2. UVa-Wise tied the contest, 4-4, with two in the top of the fourth. The Chargers took advantage of a second leadoff batter to be hit by a pitch and eventually come around to score what would be the winning tally on the second Cavs’ error for the 5-4 final.

UVa-Wise will try for a third time to play its home opener on Wednesday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill with Alice Lloyd College starting at 1:00 p.m.
