Wise, VA - In a third attempt for the 2006 home baseball opener, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise posted two close wins over Alice Lloyd College on Wednesday afternoon. Nathan Kiser’s sixth inning solo homer won the opener, 5-4, and the Cavs jumped out to an early lead before holding on for the 5-3 victory in the nightcap for the sweep.

After an opening tally in the first, the Eagles (0-2) pushed a trio of scores across the plate for a 4-0 advantage in the fourth. With one out, Jon Reed tripled to center for Uva-Wise (6-2). Andrew Anderson followed with his second round-tripper of the year to left field to plate Reed. Nathan Kiser made it three hits in a row with a double and scored on a Wil Childress single. Childress eventually added the fourth Cavs’ run on a run-scoring ground out from Matt Hall to tie the game 4-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kiser led off the UVa-Wise at bat with a long blast over the right field wall to edge ahead 5-4. David Jones came on and fired a scoreless top of the seventh to pick up the Cavs’ save.

Along with Kiser’s two extra base hits, Narvaez, Reed and Childress added pairs of their own at the plate.

In game two, UVa-Wise jumped out to a quick five-run lead over the first three innings. Carlos Ramos bunted for a single, stole second and scored on a sac fly by Reed in the first. After two outs in the second, Childress doubled and Erik Lemley was hit by a pitch. Ramos singled to right field to plate Childress. Edwin Narvaez followed with a two-run single to left center to make it 4-0 after two frames.

Kiser walked and Brock Funk singled. Lemley doubled to right center two batters later to score Kiser for a 5-0 UVa-Wise lead after three innings.

Alice Lloyd recorded three scores in the top of the fifth inning on three hits to cut its deficit to 5-3. Clay Salyer held the Eagles scoreless in the sixth before Jones picked up his second save of the day and fourth of the year without allowing a run in the seventh.

Jorge LaBoy lined three singles in four trips to the plate. Ramos, Funk and Childress had two hits apiece of the Cavs’ 12 for the game.
