Wise, VA – Jon Reed blistered five hits in seven trips to the plate and The University of Virginia’s College at Wise put together two big fourth innings to aid in sweeping King College Saturday on the diamond.
The Highland Cavaliers posted eight runs in the fourth frame to take a 10-8 victory in game one. The home team had a second big fourth inning with four scores in the nightcap for an 8-5 victory.
Reed had five hits in seven at bats including a two-run homer, a double and four rbi. The Cavs also received three hits from Jorge LaBoy, Nathan Kiser, Wil Childress and Matt Hall as they totaled 24 hits for the doubleheader. Brandon Bates and Clay Salyer picked up the mound wins while David Jones recorded his fifth save of the year in game two.
Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, UVa-Wise (8-2, 2-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) took advantage of three costly King (3-11, 0-2 AAC)errors. Childress and Hall started the big run output with back-to-back doubles before the three straight Tornado errors. Reed had an rbi double and Kiser sliced a two-run single as the Cavs went ahead 10-3.
King chipped away at the deficit with a run in the fifth and eighth before falling just short with three runs in the top of the ninth but could not mount any more against hurler David Jones for the 10-8 final.
UVa-Wise answered every King score in the second contest. King pushed across single runs in both the second and third only to see Uva-Wise have two scores in its trip to the plate in the same innings.
Jimmy Rudolph blasted his second homer of the day for King in the top of the fourth to tie the game 4-4. Again, the Cavs had the answer. After two outs, Carlos Ramos doubled to center and was singled home by Edwin Narvaez, who would steal second. Laboy singled home Narvaez before Reed powered a two-run homer to finish the inning ahead 8-4.
The Tornado plated one more run before Jones came on for his fifth save of the year for the Cavs.
Rudolph was the big hitter for King. He had two home runs, three hits and five rbi. Bryan Cruze added four hits and Joe Craven lined two doubles.
UVa-Wise will try to pick up another pair of wins on Sunday when it plays at Shawnee State (OH) starting at 1:00 p.m.
