Golden Bears One-Hit Cavs Twice

Montgomery, WV – West Virginia Tech’s top two hurlers, Donovan Reeves and Marty Wiesler, quieted what was red hot UVA-Wise bats in two one-hitters to sweep the baseball twinbill, 10-0 in five innings and 5-0 in the second contest.
Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) sliced a double in the fourth of the opener and Edwin Narvaez lined a single in the second of the nightcap for all of the Highland Cavaliers’ hits. Matt Begley (Norton, VA) went all four innings in the first game while Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) pitched the first five and Matt Sinnes (Roanoke, VA) worked the sixth.
West Virginia Tech (8-2) has now shutout UVA-Wise (11-4-1) in each of the last three meetings. Last April 2 nd, the Golden Bears blanked the Cavs in a single game, 11-0 in seven innings.
In the opener, the Golden Bears lined seven hits, drew two walks and took advantage of one Cavs’ error to plate seven tallies. The host team added a single score in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 10-0 while Reeves one-hit the visitors.
For the second time in less than two years, Weisler dominated UVA-Wise. The top WV Tech pitcher allowed one hit in the 2006 meeting and matched that mastery with giving up just the second inning single to Narvaez. The home team plated four runs in the second with a double from Marty Kaetzel being the big hit and added an insurance run in the sixth for the 5-0 final.
UVA-Wise return home to have another non-conference doubleheader Wednesday starting at 1:00 p.m. against southwest Virginia rival Emory & Henry College.
