Robbins Lead Offense in Opener and Saves Game Two in UVA-Wise Sweep of VI

Wise, VA – Brad Robbins lined four extra base hits and drove in five runs before saving the second baseball game on the mound as UVA-Wise swept Virginia Intermont, 16-5 in seven innings and 8-5, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) was a perfect three for three with two doubles and a triple with three rbi in the first game before adding a two-run triple in the second game. He came on in the top of the seventh with two one and no outs to entice a double play and a force out for his first collegiate save for UVA-Wise (18-5-1/7-1 AAC).
Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) continued his strong hitting with four hits including a double and solo home run, his first, in game one. Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) had three singles and five runs batted in while pitching the first five innings of game one to improve to 3-0, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strike outs.
Matt Begley (Norton, VA) had a pair of doubles and three hits while John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) added three singles and scored four runs. David Jones (Amelia, VA) went the first six frames of game two allowing six hits, one earned run and five walks while fanning eight to take his season mark to 6-0.
Virginia Intermont (10-22-1/1-7 AAC) received three hit days from Josh Self and John Stereatt, who had a three-run homer. Chase Watkins and Derek Ward had doubles.
In the opener, Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) capped a two-run second with a rbi single up the middle. Verts laced a two-run single and Robbins a run-scoring triple inside the first base bag as part of a four-run third as the Cavs went ahead 6-0.
Hall homered in the fourth to make it 7-0 before the Cobras scored twice in the top of the fifth. UVA-Wise put the game out of reach in the home half of the fifth. The Cavs pushed across nine runs on seven hits with a two-run doubles by Begley and Robbins along with a two-score single from Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) to make it 16-2. Virginia Intermont added a single tally in the sixth and two more in the seven but fell by the run-rule in the seventh, 16-5.
The visitors started off quick against Jones in the first. After an error and walk put two runners on with two outs, Stereatt homered to right center to lead 3-0.
The advantage would be short lived. UVA-Wise was able to score three of its own compliments of two errors to tie, 3-3. The Cavs scored the game-winning runs in the second as Edwin Narvaez doubled in one run and Robbins tripled to center field for two more as part of a five run at bat for an 8-3 score.
The Cobras plated single tallies in the fourth and fifth to cut it to 8-5. In the seventh after walks by Watkins and Self, Robbins came on to relieve Jones. The pitcher saw Stereatt lined out to Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) at short and onto Narvaez for a force out double play. Jay Steel followed for the Cobras by grounding into a force out to end the game, 8-5.
UVA-Wise will go to Pikeville College for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill on Wednesday afternoon.
