Robbins Blasts Three Homers but UVA-Wise Splits DH at Pikeville

April 3, 2007

Pikeville, KY – Brad Robbins kept on his torrid hitting streak by blasting three homers runs, drove in seven runs and won the opening game on the mound, 6-3, but UVA-Wise finished the makeup twinbill at Pikeville Tuesday by dropping the night game, 6-3.

Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) went three for four in the opener with a solo homer and a three-run home run for five rbi. He followed the first game with a two-run round-tripper in the late game to now give him seven home runs and 22 rbi in 15 games this season. The sophomore (2-2) also picked up the game one win for the Highland Cavaliers (19-8-1) by going six innings giving up three earned runs, four hits and five walks while fanning three.

Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) had two hits in game one including his sixth home run of the year, a solo variety. Brock Funk (Fries, VA) lined two singles in the opener while Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) had a run-scoring double in the late contest. Pitcher David Jones (Amelia, VA) earned his first save of the season with a perfect seven innings in the opening affair.

After Pikeville (17-16-1) scored twice in the home first, Robbins and Laboy connected for solo home runs in the second and third to tie the game, 2-2. The Bears added a third run to edge ahead in the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Laboy singled and Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) walked before Robbins drove both runners in with his second home run of the game to go ahead, 5-3. The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh before Jones sent down the Bears in order for the 6-3 win.

UVA-Wise played its entire bench in game two and saw Pikeville take advantage with a five-run third. Trailing 6-0, Robbins hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Lang doubled in the squad’s third run but was not enough to comeback and fell 6-3.

Matt Begley (Norton, VA), who is now 2-2, suffered the late contest defeat while Preston Landes (Radford, VA) pitched the fifth and Seth Frisby (Yorktown, VA) was on the mound for the sixth frame.

The Cavs will next travel to Montreat College for a Saturday twinbill starting at 12:00 p.m.
