UVA-Wise Win Big, Lose Tight One in Makeup DH at Montreat

Montreat, NC – In a makeup Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader pushed back from the weekend, UVA-Wise doubled up host Montreat, 16-8, in the opener before falling in a tight 3-1 late affair. Jorge Laboy paced the Highland Cavaliers with five hits and two home runs on the day.
With the split, UVA-Wise moves into a tie for fourth in the AAC standings with King College at 8-4 with three doubleheaders remaining. Montreat moved to 6-6 in the league and 19-15 for the year.
Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) had an impressive first game. He went four for five with a solo round-tripper and four rbi. The junior added a solo shot for his eighth of the year, a career high. UVA-Wise belted three other home runs in the first game with solo shots from Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) and Brock Funk (Fries, VA) while Edwin Narvaez (Morovis, PR) had a two-run homer. Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) lined two doubles and three hits overall in the first game. Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) and John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) added a doubles.
Matt Sinnes (Roanoke, VA) picked up his second win (2-1) with seven solid frames in relief in the opener. The junior hurler allowed four hits and three earned runs while fanning six.
Trailing 5-0, UVA-Wise cut into the difference with a pair of scores in the third to make it 5-2. The visitors had the biggest trip to the plate of the day in the fourth. Narvaez belted a two-run homer and Verts followed with a solo home run to tie the game. The Cavs added three more scores as Bigley doubled, Funk lined a hit, Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) recorded a single and Laboy laced a two-bagger to go ahead 9-5.
After a single score from UVA-Wise in the fifth, Montreat plated a trio of scores to pull within 10-8. The Cavs put the game away in the sixth with two-run doubles from Anderson and Hall. Funk added a solo homer in the eighth and Laboy one of his own in the ninth for the 16-8 final.
Montreat was able to score once in the first and one more in the third for the second contest. UVA-Wise received its only offensive output in the fourth when Laboy went deep to make it 2-1. The home team added an insurance run in the fifth to post a 3-1 win.
David Jones (Amelia, VA) went the distance on a strong outing for UVA-Wise. Jones pitched six innings where he allowed just three hits, one earned run and walked four while striking out five to fall to 6-2.
UVA-Wise will next return to Stallard Field for a twinbill against Alice Lloyd College on Thursday starting at 1:00 p.m.
