Wise, VA – The UVA-Wise baseball team pounded 16 hits in four trips to the plate to run-rule the Alice Lloyd Eagles, 12-1. The Eagles won the battle of the young players in the second contest, 4-2, over the Highland Cavaliers.
UVA-Wise outfielder Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) had a perfect five for five day at the plate. The sophomore was three for three in the first game and added two more hits in the late game as he had a doubles, three runs and three rbi.
Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) lined three hits with a double for the Cavs (21-10-1) in the first contest. Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) sliced two doubles along with one each from Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA), John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) and Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA). Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) belted a three-run homer in the first game.
The Hillsville connection of Matt Hall, who drove in a run with a single and another with a sac fly in the first game, and Brad Austin ( Hillsville, VA), who lined two singles in the late affair, had good outings.
Pitcher Matt Begley (Norton, VA) held Alice Lloyd (9-27) to four hits, one earned run and struck out four for his third win of the season.
Tied 1-1, the Cavs scored three times in the bottom of the second with run-scoring hits from Lang and Laboy. The home team added five more tallies in the third including two-baggers from Robbins and Stoupa for a 9-1 score.
After a Bigley double and Robbins walk, Anderson connected for his third homer of the year in the fourth to make it 12-1. Begley held the Eagles scoreless in the fifth for the run-rule final.
Alice Lloyd won the battle of the backups in the late contest. The Eagles scored twice in the first before Lang doubled home Austin for a 2-1 score after one frame.
The visitors added two more runs off Preston Landes (Radford, VA), who made his first career collegiate start and second mound appearance, in the third for a 4-1 score. A Lang sac fly in the fifth was the only other score UVA-Wise could mount to fall 4-2 in the contest.
UVA-Wise will return to Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Union College starting at 12:00 p.m.
