Cavs’ Baseball Takes Pair from Wasps

Emory, VA – For the second time on the season, UVA-Wise was able to take a pair of baseball contests from Emory & Henry College. The Highland Cavaliers pounded out 22 runs and 28 hits to sweep the Wasps by scores of 10-6 and 12-5.
UVA-Wise improved to 24-11-1 while Emory & Henry fell to 5-27 on the season.
Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) and Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) had big days at the plate for the Cavs. Hall lined three hits in the first game and another two in the late game. Robbins took over the team lead in round-trippers with a two-run shot in the first game and another two-run home run in the second contest as part of his own five-hit day including a double as well.
John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) produced a double and solo home run while Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) had a three hit late game with a two-run homer, a double and five rbi. Clay Christian (Wise, VA) lined two hits with a double in the first game while both Brock Funk (Fries, VA) and Jeremy Wright ( Bristol, VA) added doubles in game two.
Matt Begley (Norton, VA) improved to 4-2 by allowing just one run over five innings of game one before giving away to both Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) and Seth Frisby (Yorktown, VA) logged went a frame each to finish the contest. Funk took over in the fourth of the nightcap for the victory to go to 5-1 after Bigley started and went three innings.
The Cavs scored twice in the second and four more in the fifth to lead 6-1 in the first game. The Wasps cut the margin to 6-3 in the home sixth before Robbins spurred a four-run top of the seventh with a two-run home run. The home team scored three in the bottom of the seventh but was not enough to fall 10-6.
In the late ballgame, Emory & Henry scored once in the first. UVA-Wise broke out with a pair in the second before Robbins belted a two-run home run, his 10 th of the year, and Anderson added his own two-score home run as part of a five score third to go ahead 7-1.
The Wasps scored a trio in the home third compliments of a Matt Duffy two-run home run. The Cavs scored one time in the fifth before a Bigley solo shot was part of a four-run seventh. The home crew was able to plate one tally in the seventh but was not enough for the 12-5 final.
UVA-Wise will now be off until traveling to Milligan College for an Appalachian Athletic Conference double dip on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
