Cavs Take One of Two on Diamond at Milligan

Milligan College, TN – UVA-Wise was able to take the first baseball game, 4-2, behind strong pitching and two doubles from Brad Robbins before the toll of six games in five days took its toll as Milligan prevailed 12-2 in five innings of the last affair.
The Buffs stay in second place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 11-5 and 23-21 overall. The Highland Cavaliers are right behind at 10-6 while 25-12-1 on the season.
Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) lined a pair of doubles. He (3-3) hurled the first 5 1/3 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, a walk and four strikeouts. Brock Funk (Fries, VA) pitched the seventh inning before Matt Sinnes (Roanoke, VA) threw a scoreless final two frames for the save.
Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) had a double and single at the plate. Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) went two for three with a double in the late contest. David Jones suffered his third defeat of the year to fall to 7-3 throwing the opening three frames of game two. Matt Begley (Norton, VA) and Seth Frisby (Yorktown, VA) pitched the fourth and fifth innings.
UVA-Wise pushed across single scores in the first and second to lead 2-0. The score held true until the sixth when Robbins doubled home John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA), who reached on a fielder’s choice, to make it 3-0. Milligan cut the margin to 3-2 with one run in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Sinnes kept the home team off the board in the final two frames for the 4-2 final.
The Cavs scored first in the second game with one run in the first. The Buffs took control from that point. Milligan scored twice in each of the first and third innings to make it 4-1. The home squad did not stop as they produced a big six run fourth for a 10-1 tally.
UVA-Wise scored once in the top of the fifth before Milligan won by the run-rule with two more in the home half of the inning for a 12-2 final.
The Cavs will now be off until Tuesday when they host Pikeville College for a twinbill starting at 2:00 p.m.
