Cavs Score Nine Times in Final Four Frames to Take Lions

Bristol, TN -- The Highland Cavaliers stayed alive in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament by scoring nine times in the final four frames to take a 12-4 victory over the Lions of Bryan College on Thursday afternoon.

UVA-Wise will now move on to face King College in the next round of the loser's bracket for a 7:00 p.m. contest to be played at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport.

Andrew Anderson, who doubled twice, and Matt Hall led the 17-hit attack with hits apiece. Josh Verts, Brad Robbins, Edwin Narvaez and Alan Stoupa sliced doubles as part of two hits each. Jorge Laboy added two singles and Clay Christian one. Brock Funk picked up the win with six innings of work with seven strikeouts. Joh Bigley and Matt Begley covered the final three innings on the mound as the two allowed two hits and one run in their work.

In the top of the third, Hall singled in one run of the three UVa-Wise scores to open a 3-0 lead. The lead doubled to 6-0 in the sixth to start four-straight innings as Anderson doubled home two runners and was brought home himself on a Stoupa double.

Bryan cut the lead in half with three tallies in the home sixth. UVa-Wise added two more scores in the seventh and one in the eighth before Christian singled in two final runs of three in the ninth for a 12-4 final.
