Bulldogs Post Seven-Run Sixth to Win Slugfest from Cavs

Kingsport, TN – For the second time in three days, Union College defeated UVa-Wise in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament. This time the Bulldogs posted seven runs in the top of the sixth to win a 14-11 slugfest and eliminate the Highland Cavaliers from the tournament.
The season for the Cavs is not over. For the first time since 2002, UVa-Wise (30-15-1) has qualified for the NAIA Region XII tournament to be held on the same field at Hunter Wright Stadium starting on Wednesday, May 9 th. Union (42-13) also will move on to the regional.
Matt Hall had the hot stick with four hits in six trips to the plate. Josh Verts continued his outstanding hitting for the tournament with a double, two singles, two runs and three rbi while Mike Lang also had a similar contest with a double, single, two runs and two runs drove in. Clay Christian doubled with two hits and Brad Robbins added two singles.
UVa-Wise burst onto the board in the home first. Edwin Narvaez lofted a sac fly and Christian hit a run-scoring single as part of a three run frame.
Union edged ahead with a pair of runs in both the second and fourth innings to lead 4-3. The lead was short lived as Verts doubled home two runs in the four run frame to go back ahead 7-4 after four innings.
The scored was 8-4 when the Bulldogs exploded for their big trip to the plate. Union lined six hits and took advantage of two UVa-Wise miscues to plate seven tallies to go back in front 11-8.
Verts drove in Lang with a single to left field in the home seventh but was not enough to fall 14-11.
