Six-Run Second Enough to Take Cavs Past Golden Eagles

Kingsport, TN – UVA-Wise plated six runs in the top of the second inning and made the tallies prove to be enough to get past Spalding College, 6-5. The Highland Cavaliers move into the loser’s bracket final on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against Appalachian Athletic Conference champion Tennessee Wesleyan.
Starting pitcher Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) recorded a strong 6 2/3 innings on the mound. The sophomore allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out three for his fourth victory. Brock Funk (Fries, VA) went 1/3 rd of an inning before John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) picked up his second save working the final two innings.
Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) and Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) paced the team at the plate with two hits apiece. Verts had a two-run double, the team’s lone extra base hit. Bigley drove in a run on a single while Robbins had a hit and run scored. Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA), Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) and Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) posted the Cavs’ other three singles.
After a scoreless first inning, Robbins led off the top of the second with a single and two batters later Anderson joined the pitcher on the base with a single. With two outs, Lang reached on a Spalding error to plate Robbins. Hall, Laboy and Bigley followed with back-to-back-to-back run-scoring singles. Verts completed the game-deciding trip to the plate with a two-run two-bagger for a 6-0 score.
Spalding was able to put single tallies on the board in the third, fifth and seventh innings for a 6-3 contest. The Golden Eagles added a pair to pull within 6-5 but Bigley held them scoreless in the bottom of the night for the save and win.
